Artist Statement:

The simple sound of rain can send me on a journey of contemplative thought about the nature of existence or the concept of infinite possibility. I am fascinated by the ideas and questions surrounding the core essence and energy of what a “thing” is, may become, or may have been. Searching both externally and internally for understanding, knowing there are no concrete answers, these ideas are explored as I create. My drawings and paintings are a physical manifestation of these thoughts and observations. Experimentation, intention, serendipity, and personal experience are just some of the factors which guide my creative process and influence the evolution of my work.

Residing all of my life in the northeastern United States, I have had the pleasure of experiencing and observing the seasonal changes. Pulling from this familiarity, while also exploring the concept of time and its effect, a series of twelve mixed media paintings on paper titled, “The Seasons”, was created. A full month’s time was taken to work on, and complete, each painting. This amount of time afforded me the luxury to thoroughly study and interpret the monthly transitions and progressions as they occurred. Along with giving special attention to daily environmental changes in weather, light, color, and movement, this body of work was created while listening to various recordings of “The Seasons”, written by Tchaikovsky. Through a process of layering and building, ‘breaking’ and ‘fixing’, the subtle changes which appeared, both in nature and the music, began to materialize in my work. Over time, each painting evolved and developed its own complex personality, just as each month and season has its own.
